Role of the Governing Body 2016 2017

THE GOVERNING BODY OF TALBOT PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Governing Body has three core strategic functions :-

i Ensuring a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction for the school

ii Holding the Head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils

iii Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure it meets its statutory responsibilities.

The day to day running of the school is the responsibility of the Head teacher. Governors aim to work in partnership with the Head teacher and the senior leadership team.

Governors come from a wide range of backgrounds. They are mainly volunteers and usually serve for four years but may serve longer. There are three parent governors, one staff governor and one governor nominated by the local authority. There are also a number of governors co-opted by the Full Governing Body on account of their skills, backgrounds and what they can contribute to the work of the school.

The Full Governing Body elects annually a Chair and Vice Chair and meets at least once each term. Most of the work is done in committees, again meeting at least once each term. The two main ones are : –

Finance, Premises and Staffing
Standards and School Development

Governors are widely involved in the school, not just in meetings but through visiting the school to see what is going on both in classrooms and in social activities. They always try and meet parents at the various events at the school. Governors produce an annual report to Parents and Carers at the start of the school year outlining what has been achieved and what lies ahead.

Clerk to the Governing Body :-

Christine Dunbar – As well as clerk, she is also a Learning Support Assistant at the school where she has now worked for 17 years.
