📚 Maths Curriculum at Talbot Primary School

At Talbot, we believe that every child deserves a strong foundation in mathematics. Our carefully sequenced curriculum is designed to build confidence, fluency, and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts from Reception through to Year 6.

🧮 Our Approach to Maths Teaching

We are currently rolling out the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation in Primary Maths documents to support our planning and teaching. This nationally recognised framework helps us ensure that children experience a well-sequenced and coherent journey through the maths curriculum.

  • Reception to Year 4: These year groups are now following the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation. This approach breaks down the curriculum into manageable, connected steps, ensuring that children master key concepts before moving on.
  • Year 5 and Year 6: These classes continue to use the White Rose Maths scheme to support their planning and teaching. White Rose provides structured lessons, visual representations, and problem-solving opportunities that align with the National Curriculum.

To further strengthen number sense and fluency, we use Mastering Number in Years 1, 2, 4, and 5. These short, daily sessions focus on developing children's confidence and flexibility with number facts, particularly in relation to additive relationships and place value. Activities include:

  • Using rekenreks and visual representations to explore number bonds and patterns
  • Practising subitising and rapid recall of number facts
  • Engaging in structured conversations around number strategies
  • Building a strong foundation for mental arithmetic and calculation strategies

These sessions are designed to be engaging, consistent, and impactful, helping children to build fluency that supports their wider mathematical learning.

🧠 What Does This Mean for Your Child?

  • Consistency and Progression: Whether your child is in Reception or Year 6, they will experience a consistent approach to maths that builds on prior knowledge and prepares them for future learning.
  • Mastery and Depth: We focus on helping children understand the ‘why’ behind mathematical processes, not just the ‘how’. This supports long-term retention and application of skills.
  • Support and Challenge: Our curriculum is designed to support all learners, with opportunities for additional practice and challenge where needed.

📅 Curriculum Overview by Year Group

Please see the attached document below for details of the National Curriculum. In due course the curriculum overveiw for each year group will be added.

Here’s a very brief look at what your child will be learning:

  • Reception: Early number sense, counting, comparing quantities, shape, space, and measures.
  • Year 1–2: Place value, addition and subtraction, simple multiplication and division, fractions, time, and measurement.
  • Year 3–4: Times tables, formal written methods, fractions and decimals, geometry, and problem-solving.
  • Year 5–6: Long multiplication and division, percentages, ratio, algebra (Year 6), statistics, and reasoning.

🏫 How You Can Support at Home

  • Talk about numbers in everyday life – cooking, shopping, telling the time.
  • Use online resources like White Rose Maths Home Learning and NCETM’s Parent Guides.
  • Encourage a growth mindset – mistakes are part of learning!
