Our year group provides a safe and fun learning environment, where children enjoy a new and exciting learning journey every half term. In Year 2, we encourage children to be independent and resilient learners who have a thirst for knowledge.

What are we learning about this term?
Term 5 (Summer 1) 2024
Maths
In Maths, we will be beginning to look at Money. This will incorporate the children’s learning from Year 1 and reacquaint them with the coins and notes used in British currency. They will build on this by looking at making pounds, choosing the right coins and notes to make an amount and also calculate how to give change.
Following this, we will move on to looking at Fractions. Pupils will become familiar with finding ½, ¼ and ¾ as well as introducing 1/3s. They will use the skills learned to find fractions of objects, lengths and quantities.

Pupils will also undertake Mastering Number sessions four times a week with their class teacher. These sessions focus on subitising, numerical composition and some addition and subtraction facts. Through this term we will also be looking at using a Rekenrek as an effective resource.

English
Our literary theme this term is ‘Fictional Worlds and Fantasy’.
The first book we will look at is Ocean Meets Sky by The Fan Brothers. This beautiful and poignant story has stunning illustrations throughout and explores themes of family, memory and loss. The unit begins by introducing the authors to the children and highlighting the power of bookmaking/storytelling. Children find a mysterious box in the classroom labelled “Grandpa’s Stuff”. Inside they will find clues to who Grandpa was and his relationship with the main character, Finn. Finn misses his Grandfather after he has passed away and longs to travel to the fantastical worlds that his Grandpa would tell him about in his stories. Children are given a variety of meaningful writing opportunities throughout the sequence and gradually build up the skills to write an extended fantasy story of their own.
Our second text is The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward. The children are initially engaged by noticing a dragon tail and then by going on a dragon hunt across the school. Children then create a guide, exploring descriptive and positional language. They engage with the main character in the story’s thoughts and emotions through letter writing.
Phonics / Little Wandle
Pupils will continue to follow the Little Wandle phonics scheme. Pupils are set by phonic stage and will go their Phonics group once a day for half an hour. Pupils in Mr Good’s group will begin to have Spelling lessons instead which will build on the phonic knowledge they have developed over the last few years.
We will also continue the Little Wandle reading groups which will run 3 times a week. These focus on decoding, prosody and comprehension. At the end of the week, pupils will bring home the book they have been reading to share with those at home. Home reading should be an opportunity for your child to share what they have learned with you. Some children will begin reading longer ‘Fluency’ books this term. If your child is reading Fluency books, they will not be expected to change their book weekly as these are longer.
Geography
Our Geography topic this term is Around the World. In this topic pupils will familiarise with the continents and taker a closer look at some different countries and cultures. They will compare these countries to the UK, looking at climate, population and cultural differences.
Science
Our Science topic this term is Plants. The pupils will be learning about the different parts of plants and their functions. We will be looking at what plants need to survive and thrive. We will be working scientifically by conducting an experiment where plants are grown in the classroom with some being denied light or water. Pupils will compare this to a controlled example and see how this impacts a plants growth.
Art
In Art this term our topic is 3D art. Through this topic, pupils will be looking in depth at the artist Andrew Goldsworthy. This topic will allow them to create their own 3D art outside making the most of our school grounds (and hopefully the sunshine!).
Religion & Worldviews
In our R&W topic this term, we will continue our learning about Islam and hope to arrange a trip to visit a Mosque.
PSHE (Jigsaw)
In PSHE our topic is Relationships. Through this topic pupils will learn about the differences in family types and how not all families look the same. They will also discuss what makes a healthy relationship.
PE
This term our PE days are: Tuesday and Wednesday. Our focuses in PE are Cricket and children will also have the opportunity to take part in Forest School every Wednesday.
Please can children wear their PE kit to school every Tuesday and Wednesday this term. Please can you also keep an eye on the weather and dress them appropriately because although we would hope for sun there may still be some rainy days. Also, please consider putting sun cream on them in the morning before school if it is looking like it will be especially hot.

Year 2 Homework Expectations
Reading
The children will bring home their Little Wandle reading book each Friday. They will have been reading this in class with a member of the Year 2 Teaching Staff. They will have practiced decoding the words and reading it fluently. Bringing it home is an opportunity for them to share what they have learned with you and celebrate their reading success. We ask that you find 3 times through the week where they can read to you for 5-10 minutes from the book. Click here to find out more about Little Wandle
Numbots
Earlier this week pupils bought home their Numbots passwords. They can now login and engage with the platform. We recommend 15 minutes a week. Click here to access Numbots
Spelling Shed
Pupils will be set homework on Spelling Shed relating to the Phonic Level they have been assessed at. Again, we recommend 15 minutes of engagement with this over the week. The password for this will be in your child’s book bag. Click here to access Spelling Shed
