Book Trains

Welcome to the Talbot Book Trains!

Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 each have their own Book Train. The Book Train is a list of 12 highly recommended novels for the children to read. These books have been very carefully selected to introduce the children to a range of new and classic books, different authors and a variety of different story types. Some books are a bit longer and more challenging, others are shorter and more accessible. The children can read the books independently or an adult can read to them – or both! The books can be read in any order. We just want the children to read a range of excellent stories, some of which they might not have otherwise chosen.

We would like every child to read as many books from their year group’s list as possible. As they read each book, they should keep a record in their Reading Record / Pupil Planner and, once a book has been read from start to finish, an adult should sign a copy of the Book Train List next to the title of the book. Copies of the lists can be downloaded below or teachers can provide them at school.

Certificates will be awarded in assembly for those who reach certain targets: 6 books from the list will receive a Bronze Certificate, 9 books from the list will receive a Silver Certificate and all 12 books on the list will receive the prestigious Gold Certificate. There is a display in school to celebrate those who achieve these milestones in their reading.

One copy of each book will be in your child’s classroom which they can borrow and read. Alternatively, you may like to buy them their own copies - or why not pop along to your local public library and borrow from there? If they don’t have them in stock, books can be ordered in from other libraries – just ask a member of the library staff.

We look forward to hearing about the children’s exciting reading adventures over the coming months!

Thank you for your support and encouragement with reading at home.
