*PE days are Monday & Thursday

Reading books changed on Wednesday

Library books changed on Friday

English (Literacy Tree)

When we return for the Summer term we arrive to find a penguin has appeared in our classrooms. We pose different questions to the children about it's arrival, where it has come from and who it belongs to. Children soon discover that this penguin is lost and read the story 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers. This story follows the journey between a lost penguin and a boy who is keen to return him home safely. Come the end of this unit, the children will use all of their writing skills to form their own 'finding/losing' narrative.

We finish Summer 1 by introducing 'Yeti and the Bird' by Nadia Shireen. This is a heartwarming tale about an unlikely friendship. The story follows a lonely yeti who lives in the forest and a little bird who gets lost during her migration. Despite their differences, the yeti and the bird form a strong bond, helping each other through challenges and discovering the true meaning of friendship. The book carries a lovely message about kindness and companionship which is discussed within our lessons. We also look to write a character description of the yeti that includes the use of adjectives, conjunctions and the suffix -est to compare.

Maths

In Maths, children will start off by confidently learning how to count in 2s, 5s and 10s which then lends itself to approaching early exposure to coin recognition. Children will calculate the total value of coins in a set of 1p/2p/5p and 10p coins and relate what they have learnt to real life contexts. Our final unit in Summer 1 is where we learn to recognise, compose, decompose and manipulate 2D and 3D shapes.

Phonics (Little Wandle)

In Summer 1, children will consolidate their knowledge of Phase 5 and also learn how to approach reading pseudo words in readiness for the Phonics Screening Check.

*If you are unsure on how to pronounce some of these GPCs then please ask your child's class teacher and we can support you so that you can support your child.

Science

In Science, we explore our local environment and answer questions about plants growing in their habitat. Children observe the growth of flowers and vegetables from our own Talbot Garden and become familiar with common names of flowers and plant structures. We encourage working scientifically by observing closely, using magnifying glasses and compare familiar plants.

Geography

Our Geography topic in Summer 1 is focussed all about how we can save our seas from the threats that they are under. We identify the names of the different oceans and seas around the world and explore what the status of our world's coral reefs are currently like. Children are introduced to the importance of cleaning up our seas, recycling and the dangers that pollution poses to our sea creatures.

Our Geography unit is also further enhanced by a fantastic trip to our local Oceanarium where the children get to see some wonderful sea creatures in person and discuss where in the world they originate from.

R&W

Siddhartha Gautama: The Buddha (c. 563-483 BCE) | Issue 124 | Philosophy Now

In this unit, we look at the story of Prince Siddhartha Guatama who came to be known as the Buddha. We build upon our knowledge to answer the enquiry question: Why is the story of the Buddha important to Buddhists?

PSHE

In Summer 1 we focus on physical health and mental wellbeing. We begin by discussing how we can keep our bodies healthy, exploring topics such as keeping healthy; food and exercise, hygiene routines; sun safety. Heading into the Summer term, it is important that children are aware of how they can keep themselves safe in the sun and what their bodies require to stay hydrated and protected.
