Physical Education

The aim of our P.E. curriculum at Talbot Primary School is to provide rich opportunities to develop both character and physical competence. Through engaging activities and team-based challenges, children grow into happy and confident learners who approach new experiences confidently. Structured routines and cooperative games nurture politeness, respect, and good sportsmanship. Our inclusive approach to physical education encourages kindness, compassion, and care for others. Pupils build independence, resilience, and a strong work ethic as they practise skills, face challenges, and strive to improve. We aim for our children to be capable of sustaining physical activity and to be competitive with themselves and others.

Problemsolving tasks and varied sporting contexts help our pupils become adaptable thinkers who can respond effectively to new situations. By working in pairs, teams, and whole groups, children strengthen their sociability and ability to collaborate. P.E. lessons can also inspire ambition and selfmotivation, encouraging each child to pursue their potential.

Through P.E., The Talbot Child develops the skills, qualities, and knowledge needed to lead a healthy, successful, and fulfilling life.

As a school we utilise the Get Set 4 PE platform, as this provides full National Curriculum and EYFS statutory framework coverage. We have been able to build our curriculum using high quality units, planned by PE teachers, which have clear progression of skills and knowledge.

You will note, when studying the subject overview, that there is a balance between revisiting and consolidating prior learning and giving children a variety of experiences to inspire, extend and engage them. There are consistent threads which run through our curriculum: swimming; invasion games; striking and fielding games; net/wall games; dance; gymnastics; and athletics.

Our curriculum is supplemented by many opportunities for children to participate in extra-curricular sporting activities such as clubs, competitive fixtures and competitions across a wide range of sporting activities.

We make full use of our school swimming pool, with all ages swimming at different stages throughout each academic year. The school employs a qualified swimming instructor, which is further supplemented by teachers who have undergone two-day swimming training, and other staff to ensure high quality teaching and safety.
