What are we learning about this term?
Term 4 (Spring 2) 2022
Maths
In maths this term we will continue the work we began at the end of Term 3 looking at Length & Perimeter which will include add and subtracting lengths as well as measuring and calculating perimeter. Following that we will begin to look at our next topic – Fractions. This will see the children find a half, quarter and third of objects as well as developing an understanding of unit, non-unit and equivalent fractions.
With our Times Tables we will continue to review the 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s but will be introducing the 4s.
English
After we complete our “Escape from Pompeii” newspaper reports, our literary theme this term will be ‘Overcoming adversity’ and we have 3 exciting new books which we will be looking at in our reading and writing lessons to support this. These are Cloud Tea Monkeys by Mal Peet and Elspeth Graham, Sparky by Jenny Offill and a wonderful non-fiction text called Africa, Amazing Africa: Country by Country by Atinuke. As well as discussing and dissecting the texts through our lessons, pupils will also be given opportunities to write in response to the texts with examples including: descriptive passages, a ‘how to’ guide, letters, non-chronological reports and their own version of one of the narratives.
Geography
This term pupils will be studying Mountains in their Geography lessons. By the end of this unit, the children should be able to answer these questions with confidence: What is a mountain? How do mountains form? How do they change over time? What are the features of mountains? What is the difference between mountains and hills? What are the most common types of mountains?
Science
Our key question in Science this term is ‘Why are rocks different?’ Through this topic children will learn to describe and compare rocks according to their features using scientific language. They will also learn how sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks are formed and how they are linked by the rock cycle. Further to this they will also learn the process through which fossils are formed and the different layers of rock and soil that are beneath our feet.
DT
This term we are looking at Mechanical Systems in DT with a focus on levers and linkages. Pupils will incorporate the knowledge they gain about volcanoes in Geography to create pop up books using the skills covered in their DT lessons.
Jigsaw (PSHE)
The focus of our PSHE lessons will be Healthy Me. Through this topic, pupils will discuss and deepen their understanding of why it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise often. They will learn about what this looks like and how they can implement this in their lives.
Forest School
Year 3 will also have Forest School this term. This will happen every Wednesday. Pupils will take part in outdoor workshops that will see them learn skills such as:
- Fire lighting
- Den and shelter building
- Navigation using man made and natural methods
- Tree identification and their uses
- Team building/cooperative adventure games
- Making string
As these sessions will be delivered on the field (in all weather!), it is vital that pupils bring appropriate clothing. This includes warm, waterproof clothes (this should include a coat) and wellies.
PE - Swimming
This half term we will be swimming on Fridays for PE. Please see the timetable below.
Homework
Homework expectations are:
Maths: Pupils are expected to complete 15 games on TTRockstars each week. These are set each Friday morning and should be completed by the following Friday morning.
Reading: We do not use Reading Records in Year 3 but pupils are expected to read at home with a parent a minimum of 3 times a week. We use Accelerated Reader to track their reading progress, you can learn more about this scheme here.
