Term 6 (Summer 2)

Maths

This half-term our maths units will be: Symmetry in 2D Shapes, Time, and Division with Remainders. In Year 4 we follow the NCETM Curriculum Map. More information on this can be found here: NCETM Curriculum Map

Pupils will also undertake Mastering Number sessions five times a week with their class teacher. These sessions focus on developing fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number.

Reading and Writing

Spelling

Children have daily spelling lessons focussing on a different spelling rule each week.

Geography

The children will be learning all about the Amazon Rainforest. They will learn what deforestation means as well as the names of the trees in the rainforest and their layers. They will learn what an ecosystem is and how important it is to save our rainforest.

Science

Our focus is on the human effect on the environment. We investigate the human impact on our county of Dorset and the Amazon rainforest.

Art

Children are going to be printmaking. This is when you apply paint or ink to the surface of something. They will be learning about different types of printing like relief printing or block printing, and using varied materials like wood, lino (like rubber) or styrofoam (like polystyrene) they will finish by creating a rainforest animal on their Styrofoam to create a rainforest picture.

Religion & Worldviews

Our R&W topic this term is Sikhi. Children will aim to answer the question 'Do Sikhs think it is important to share?'

PSHE

This half-term, Year 4 will focus on change. Children learn about puberty and the emotional and physical changes which will happen to their bodies.

PE

This term our PE days are TBC. On these days, children should come to school wearing their PE kit. The topics this half-term are Athletics and Cricket.

Computing

The focus this half-term is Programming B: Repetition in Games. Learners will explore the concept of repetition in programming using the Scratch environment. The unit begins with a Scratch activity similar to that carried out in Logo in Programming unit A, where learners can discover similarities between two environments. Learners look at the difference between count-controlled and infinite loops, and use their knowledge to modify existing animations and games using repetition. Their final project is to design and create a game which uses repetition, applying stages of programming design throughout.

Music

More Samba and Performance. As the unit on samba progresses, we will perform as an organised group, using signals to recognise changes in rhythms and tempo. We can then increase the number of grooves and the complexities of the breaks to be able to perform as a full samba band.

Spanish

Alien Faces and Family. The children will start this half-term with a cultural lesson finding out about Epiphany in Spain. The children will be introduced to the alien family and learn the nouns for family members. They will introduce one family member, using this as an opportunity to recall personal information. The children will then move on to facial features in Spanish, learning nouns in the singular and plural, and use this to describe the face of an alien, including numbers.
