Curriculum

Year 1 Topics

Autumn 1 - Castles

We begin the school year with the exciting theme of castles. We learn about the parts of castles and daily life in castles which we explore through role play in the classroom. We also go and explore Corfe Castle where we can see all that we have learnt about in real life.

Autumn 2 - Festivals

We explore how, what and why people celebrate different festivals in the UK and beyond. We learn about Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot so that we can understand why we celebrate Bonfire Night. We also learn about the Mexican Day of the Dead festival and Diwali before focusing on Christmas.

Spring 1 - Madagascar

We begin by learning about the continents and the location of Madagascar as part of Africa. We learn about the unique wildlife and vegetation of Madagascar. We also look at colourful printing, weaving and masks in Africa to inspire our work in art learning about printing techniques. In music the children learn African drumming, including an African drumming workshop.

Spring 2 - AFCB

To explore local history, we learn about how the community saved the local football club, why they call themselves The Cherries and key figures that are part of AFCB´s success today.  We continue this theme in Design and Technology where the children design and build models for a new stadium design for AFCB. We also hope to go to AFCB´s Vitality Stadium for a Stadium Tour.

If you have any personal memories, experiences of memorabilia that you could share with us for this very local topic, please let the Year 1 teachers know.

At the same time, as the spring emerges, in science we will learn to identify and name some wild flowers of the UK.

Summer 1 - Under the Sea

We begin the summer term with the topic, Under the Sea, where we learn about what we can find on the coastline and in the sea, both near and far. In Science, we will learn to identify and name sea shells that can be found on our local beaches. We will also learn to name the ocean and seas around the UK: the Atlantic Ocean, the Irish Sea, the Celtic Sea, the North Sea and The English Channel.

Our key question for this topic is, how can we save our seas? So we will consider how we can look after our seas by choosing to use less single use plastic and making more sustainable choices about seafood.

We will also go to Bournemouth Sealife Centre to see some of the creatures that we have been learning about.

Summer 2 - Heath and Harbour

We will make use of our rich local geography and history by learning about the geography and variety of habitats that make Poole Harbour.  A trip to local heathland will provide the ideal place to put some of our learning into real life. We will also find out about key people, trades and places in the history of Poole Harbour.

Our key question for this topic is, what can you see and do in and around Poole?
